Sodium chloride (or salt) is a common ingredient in our foods. While sodium is necessary for our bodies to help regulate fluid balance, too much table salt can be harmful to our hearts. According to the American Heart Association, eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure and make your heart work harder. The recommended amount of salt is 2,300 mg (1 tablespoon), but most Americans consume around 3,400 mg. Instead of packaged, processed foods, try flavoring your food with herbs and spices like garlic, onion, and chili powder. When shopping for food, read the nutrition label to find out how much sodium is in each serving.
