Sources of vitamin D
Here are some foods that contain vitamin D:
- Egg yolks
- Oily fish (herring, sardines, salmon)
- Cod liver oil
- Beef liver
Mushrooms exposed to sunlight or artificial UV light while growing have also been shown to contain vitamin D.
It is not advisable to rely solely on food to meet our vitamin D needs as these foods contain relatively low levels of this essential vitamin. Around 1 in 6 UK adults are unknowingly vitamin D deficient, particularly in the colder months.
To help supplement people’s diets, some foods are fortified with vitamin D. These include some bread, cereals, dairy products, plant milk, and spreads.
