Nanorobots Might Treat Cancer in 5 Ways

It is one thing to identify cancer cells; it is quite another to remove or destroy them. Researchers in the field of medical nanorobotics has built a nanorobot that can move directly into cancer treatment, rather than just diagnosis.

The nanorobots in the ASU/NCNT study reduced the size of tumors in mice by cutting off their blood supply. The robots were made of sheets of DNA wrapped into tubes and had blood-clotting medication on the inside. A specific DNA molecule that connects with a protein found only in malignant cells was taped to the outside of the tube.

When the little DNA molecule came into contact with a cancer cell, it would bond with the cancer cell, causing the rolled DNA to unwind and unleash the blood-clotting medication. By denying the cells vital blood flow, this efficiently killed cancer cells and shrank tumors.
