One of the most commonly misdiagnosed symptoms of bladder cancer is frequent or urgent urination. These symptoms often resemble urinary tract infections (UTIs), causing delays in proper diagnosis. However, in cases of bladder cancer, the urgency stems from tumor growth irritating the bladder wall. Studies show that about 20–30% of patients present with urgency or frequency without visible blood. If these symptoms persist after UTI treatment, further tests such as urine cytology or CT urography should be considered. Early recognition leads to lower treatment costs, often avoiding advanced therapies like chemoradiation. Include these symptoms in your cancer screening discussions with your doctor, especially if you are over 50, a smoker, or have occupational exposure to carcinogens.
