The spread is highly processed, so it remains solid at room temperature – and if you buy margarine in a stick form, it has been hydrogenated to preserve its shape and lengthen its shelf life. The hydrogenation process that margarine goes through converts some of the oils into dangerous trans fats, which raise blood levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol. Trans fats or trans fatty acids (TFAs) are found in a broad variety of meals, notably fried or baked goods, however, they should be avoided as much as possible due to their negative effects on the body.

There are healthier oils to use instead of margarine, such as olive or avocado oil, but if you’re searching for a spread to soften your bread, butter is the way to go. Though it is high in calories and saturated fat, research suggests that butter can have positive cardiovascular and metabolic benefits. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition discovered that because it is high in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), it can improve glucose tolerance and lower the risk of obesity.

Butter is also high in essential elements like calcium, and because recent research published in the American Journal of Nutrition suggests that saturated fats in butter aren’t associated with an increased risk of heart disease, we believe it’s a terrific alternative.
