We all know that Germans can do some pretty crazy things, from watching the world burn to attend the famed Oktoberfest. Bertolt Brecht, a German poet, created a considerably crueler and evil rendition of John Gay’s opera (The Beggar’s Opera) in 1928. Bertolt Brecht created an enormous work: with characters like Mack the Knife and Pirate Jenny, as well as the London Underground as a location, you know it’s going to be a wild voyage. The first few phrases still give me goosebumps. Needless to say, the Nazis outlawed the entire work.
