The announcement of Time magazine’s “person of the year” is one of the most significant annual media rituals in our civilized society. There must have been a lot of candidates this year, but Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, and the spirit of Ukraine shone out above the rest.
Zelensky’s conception of victory, as the magazine points out, extends beyond the liberation of Ukrainian territory from Russian occupation. He claims that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine this year is merely another effort to annex the country. In the previous 300 years, Russia has had a lengthy history of waging murderous wars, creating hunger, and oppressing millions of Ukrainians.
You can read the Times article whenever you have a chance, but there are a few intriguing details regarding Zelensky that weren’t included in the magazine’s pages.
