Gum disease, believe it or not, shares some of the same risk factors as heart disease. Bacteria in the gums, according to Harvard Health, can move to blood vessels. These bacteria cause artery inflammation and the formation of small blood clots, increasing the risk of stroke. This link has been documented in study after study.
There is some disagreement about how much influence oral health has on heart health. The American Heart Association evaluated much research in 2012 and concluded that gum disease does not usually hurt the heart. Even so, you should clean and floss your teeth every day if possible.
