5- Carrhae’s Lost Roman Legion
Far be it from us to call into question the skill of Marcus Licinius Crassus, the Roman general credited with changing the Roman Republic into the Great Empire that it became, yet 53 BCE was not one of his greatest years. That’s when he was killed in action while leading tens of thousands of his soldiers to a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Carrhae in modern-day Turkey. We know that approximately 20,000 Roman soldiers were slaughtered, but the fate of the remaining 10,000 Roman soldiers taken by the Parthians will most likely stay unknown.
